Signs you need emergency water heater repair

Some water heater problems can wait for a scheduled visit. Others can damage your home or become unsafe within hours. Treat it as an emergency when water is actively escaping, when there is a gas smell or scorch marks, or when a household depends on hot water for health or work and has none.

Call right away if you see any of the following:

    • Water pooling around the heater, soaking drywall, carpet or a garage floor.
    • A steady stream or spray from the relief valve pipe, a fitting or the tank body.
    • No hot water at all, especially with children, elderly family or tenants in the home.
    • A gas smell near the heater (leave the area first and call your gas utility).
    • Scorch marks, soot or flames outside the burner compartment.
    • Loud banging or rumbling with water that is suddenly far hotter than normal.

    What's included

An emergency visit focuses on stopping damage, making the heater safe and then restoring hot water. We explain what we found and the price before any repair or replacement work.

    • Emergency calls answered 24/7

    • Finding the exact source of a leak
    • Diagnosis of gas, electric and tankless heaters
    • Upfront price before repair or replacement
    • Same-day repair when the part is available
    • Same-day replacement when the tank has failed
    • Haul-away of the old heater on replacements

    Tank vs tankless options

Tank emergencies. The most serious tank emergency is a leak from the tank body. Once the inner lining corrodes through, the leak only gets worse, and the heater has to be replaced. Leaks from a drain valve, relief valve or supply fitting can usually be repaired. A tank with no hot water most often has a failed thermocouple, gas control, element or thermostat. See same-day water heater replacement if the tank cannot be saved.

Tankless emergencies. Tankless units rarely flood a room, but they can stop producing hot water without warning. Note the error code on the display before resetting. Scale, a blocked inlet filter, ignition faults and venting problems are common causes. A leak inside the tankless cabinet should be shut off at the isolation valves until it is inspected. See tankless water heater repair.

    How long it takes

Making the heater safe, shutting off the water and finding a leak usually happens soon after the technician arrives. Repairs using parts carried on the truck, such as a thermocouple, igniter, element, valve or fitting, are often completed in the same visit.

If the tank itself is leaking, a replacement is required. We carry common tank sizes so many replacements can be finished the same day. Unusual sizes, tight installs, code upgrades or tankless parts that must be ordered can take longer, and we will tell you before work starts.

Arrival time depends on your location, traffic and how many emergency calls are already scheduled. Call (714) 244-8562 with your address to confirm availability. TODO: confirm typical emergency arrival windows with the owner before publishing specific times.

What to do before we arrive

If the heater is leaking: close the cold water shut-off valve on the pipe that feeds the top of the heater. On a gas tank, turn the gas control knob to "Off" or "Pilot." On an electric tank, switch off its breaker. Move stored boxes and valuables away from the water, and put towels or a wet vacuum to work on the floor. Do not try to drain a hot tank yourself; the water can scald.

If you smell gas: leave the house, do not use light switches, phones or anything that could spark inside, and call your gas utility or 911 from outside. Call us once the utility says the area is safe.

If the relief valve is discharging: never cap or plug the valve or its discharge pipe. A relief valve that opens is releasing excess temperature or pressure. Shut off the gas or power and the cold supply, and call us.

If you have a tankless unit: write down the error code and the brand and model from the label before resetting it. That information lets us bring the right parts.

Repair or replace in an emergency

We do not push replacement when a repair will safely restore hot water. A failed thermocouple, igniter, element or relief valve is a repair. A tank that is leaking from its body, or a heater that has a cracked heat exchanger or serious venting damage, needs replacement for safety.

When replacement is needed, we explain the size and fuel options, any code items such as seismic straps or an expansion tank, and the upfront price. If you have been thinking about going tankless, ask about tank-to-tankless conversion, but a like-for-like tank is usually the fastest way to restore hot water.

    FAQ

Do you answer emergency water heater calls 24/7?

Yes. Emergency calls are answered 24/7 at (714) 244-8562. Call with your address so we can confirm when a technician can reach you.

What should I do if my water heater is leaking?

Close the cold water supply valve to the heater, turn the gas control to Off or Pilot or switch off the breaker on an electric heater, and keep valuables away from the water. Then call us. Do not cap a leaking relief valve.

Can a leaking water heater be repaired?

Leaks from a drain valve, relief valve or supply fitting can usually be repaired. A leak from the tank body means the lining has failed, and the heater needs to be replaced.

Can you replace my water heater the same day?

Often, yes. We carry common tank sizes, so many replacements can be finished the same day. Unusual sizes or tankless units may need parts ordered.

Will I know the price before emergency work starts?

Yes. The technician diagnoses the heater and gives you an upfront price, and no repair or replacement begins until you approve it.

What if I smell gas near my water heater?

Leave the home right away without using switches or phones inside, and call your gas utility or 911 from outside. Call us once the area has been declared safe.
